Learning Management Suite (LMS)

These are tools for managing, creating, scheduling training or learning in your organization. The terminology varies from vendor to vendor. Learning management systems (LMS) typically help to manage both classroom and on-line learning. They do not normally include content creation or management tools but may in some cases. Some LMSs may manage just classroom or just e-learning rather than both. Some LMSs may also include content authoring and managment and virtual classrooms. Learning content management systems (LCMS) emphasize the management of content for courses/training/learning. In most cases, they include content authoring tools. In some cases, they may also include some of the features of LMSs. Content authoring tools are often provided as part of an LCMS. They may also be stand-alone products. Virtual classrooms (web conferencing tools) normally are separate third party offerings but may be included as part of a suite of tools. Suites of tools include features of at least two or more of the above categories. While some companies offer just LMS or LCMS systems others offer suites of products, which provide all or most of the features of the other tools. Suites combine several capabilities of learning management--usually two or more of the following: learning management, classroom training management, e-learning management, custom content creation, learning content management, learning object repositories, or virtual classrooms.

Cloud Assets: A Guide for SMBs-Part 1

Cloud computing is changing the scope of information technology (IT) management, and organizations must be highly adaptable to safeguard the continuity of their business operations. Compliance Exposures in ERP Systems Part 1

This paper examines key issues for CFOs and CEOs in managing ERP systems in the new world of SOX, IFRS, Basle II. While most IT management attention seems to be on document retention, reporting quality, and security, there are broader issues to be considered toward ensuring good governance and compliance with regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley, IFRS and Basle II.

Mega-vendors Warming Up to the Cloud - Part 1

At the time when my recent “SaaSy Discussions” series was already being published, I had an update briefing and great discussion with Colleen Niven Smith, vice president of software-as-a-service (SaaS) initiatives at Progress Software. Smith and Progress Software’s findings on SaaS industry dynamics concur with my assertions that growth of SaaS-based offerings is expected to outpace traditional on

As noted above, Saugatuck and Progress believe that continued evolution of these marketplaces will be driven by the necessity to integrate both at the data level and business process level, across both SaaS and on-premise solutions within a specific horizontal or vertical business process. In most cases, these will be partnerships focused on a market-leading SaaS solution or solution stack (e.g., Read More

What Makes a Good White Paper Good… (part two)

And here's the second point that all writers of IT white papers should keep in mind when writing (special notice of this point should be taken by those writers who may *forget* that not everyone on the planet has the same rarified vocabulary, not mentioning the names of any jobs or fields...). 2. Selecting PLM Software Solutions Part 2 - Problem Overview

Past experience shows us that the vast majority of enterprise technology evaluations run over time and budget, and once selected, the majority of the implementations fail to meet functional, return on investment (ROI) and total cost of ownership (TCO) expectations. Many companies have consequently been stuck with under-performing software products and dejected users, and are still unable to gauge their system to determine how far they are from the ideal solution for their business requirements.

Deltek's Second Bite at the IPO Cherry (Part II)

Well, a few months after Part I of this blog post was published, which focused on Deltek's pre-New Mountain Capital private equity investment era, the time has finally come for us to analyze why being again publicly traded should (or should not) work better for Deltek this time. If one is to judge merely by the most recent financial figures, it would appear to be working well, but my focus here is

Deltek made this acquisition to make sure that EVM experts implemented Deltek EVM solutions to offer the best combination of technology and expertise in the marketplace. Prior to these additions, the traditional explanations about why Deltek would win against the generic ERP providers had meanwhile gradually lost an edge. Indeed, many of the above-mentioned large ERP providers have lately taken steps to support the unique needs of Read More

Smaller Vendors Can Still Provide Relevant Business Systems Part Five: Challenges and User Recommendations

Having to deliver a number of functionalities through third-party solutions, which are natively offered by many larger competitors, may deter some interface-wary customers. Thus, Relevant should try to provide as many third-party solutions as possible as a standard configuration, which should make customers oblivious to the origin of the module.
